Religion Revisited

Image
Religion : (noun) the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, especially a personal God or gods .  The above is the result of a simple google search of the word ‘Religion’. It is categorized as a noun, which as we know, refers to any class of people, places or thing or to a particular one of these. These days, I cannot help, but ponder over the concept of religion and the more I think over it, the more I am amazed by human’s need for classification. Without further ado, let us explore the concept of religion.  Once again, the views expressed below are my own and therefore, are subjective. Of course, you are welcome to disagree and voice out your opinion as well.    I remember writing a post in this very blog back in December 2014 in support of the movie ‘PK’. It was an opinion piece on why I felt we need more movies like PK that took liberty to view at the body of religion from an objective viewpoint. As an audience, we are made to l...

Anthony walked back to his home slowly. He was returning to his home from the service at the church. Today’s sermon had nothing new to offer, what he had not known for the last 69 years of his life. His knee was paining as ever, thanks to the arthritis now creeping in due to his old age. The walking stick was his most trusted friend now. Sometimes, he felt his walking stick was the only thing in the world he could trust with his life. A retired government employee, Anthony had lived a life what many people would have termed as a mellowed down version of a prophet’s. He was a quiet man; hardly spoke to his neighbors, always minding his own business and never interfering in the lives of others. His own friend often complained how little did they knew about him, for which he partly felt responsible. He had seen the matrix of life and had learnt how disillusioning it is. After reaching his home, he made his way to the cupboard and hung his coat on the hook. He reached his armchair ...

Social media and the rise of the voices

I have been thinking about writing this post for a very long time. Before I begin, I would like to point out that all views mentioned below are my own and therefore, are highly subjective, based on my observations. The exponential growth of social media applications like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram have bridged the gap between the classes, who were once separated by distance and societal strata. We once waited for hours in lines outside a theatre to get a glimpse of our favourite actor, but now we have access to their personal lives, thanks to their accounts and fan pages on the above mentioned social media apps. Technology has indeed brought people closer than before. The use of social media is not limited to just following movie stars. We can now follow our favourite sports, see beautiful destinations that we once dreamt of seeing, check-in with our friends, learn what the politicians are up to or simply relax and enjoy the humour of sharp witted individuals, who have ...

An analysis of ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind’ There is an amazing page on Facebook called ‘The Cinemaholic’ run by a bunch of guys who claim to be cinephiles. It functions more like a blog, where the authors of the site regularly publish posts listing down some of the greatest movies ever made. Their topics also cover directors and movies the best in their genre. One such list which I happen to come across was the list of 50 best movies in the last 50 years. As I made my way down the list (they are mostly in a descending manner) I hoped the movie at number one would be a movie which I have seen. To my dismay, it was a movie titled “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind”. I had heard a lot about this movie, but never seen it on TV. None of my friends had seen it either. This could only indicate one thing. It must be an art house movie starring two popular actors. I was apprehensive to watch it thinking it would bore me with its philosophical overtones. I decided to pass o...

Reflections at 25

Reflections at 25 Two days later and the feeling is still sinking in. I feel a paradigm shift as if one particular phase of my life is now over. 25 – The age which signifies the transition to maturity. You are on the way to be defined as an adult now; no more of the young adult stuff anymore. Hell! Adele even wrote a whole album about it. As the days passed from January to March and the date came closer to mark the event, I couldn’t help, but think about this momentous occasion. Another milestone like this will now come when I am 50 years old (if I live that long ;-) Therefore, I felt the need to take a moment to pause and reflect on how my life has been so far. Note: This is a deeply personal and a very lengthy blog post. Hence, feel free to go back; otherwise you may fall asleep while reading it. I sincerely hope that you don’t. First things first.. let me focus on the negative things that have bogged me down and have consumed...
